Scott Tibbitts

Speaker, Leader, Inventor, Entrepreneur, Storyteller

Starsys started with hardware-store parts and a simple question to NASA:

"Do you think you could use these in space?"

The result was Starsys Research Corporation, a Boulder, Colorado space motor company that became the world’s leading supplier of mechanical systems for spacecraft.

With Scott as CEO, Starsys grew from a two people in a garage building thermal actuators to 150 employees and $20M in yearly revenues, with a track record of 3,000 mechanisms flown on more than 300 spacecraft with an unprecedented 100% success rate.

A different approach

Starsys success was in part due to expertise with Firm Fixed Price (FFP) aerospace technology development and delivery contracts. From 1990 through 2005 Starsys reported 15 successive years of profitable operation, culminating in a successful exit that generated 25X return to investors.

Starsys merged with SpaceDev and subsequently Sierra Nevada Corporation, now under a $2B+ contract with NASA to build Dreamchaser, a replacement for the Space Shuttle.

Recognized in the industry

Scott was the recipient of the “Esprit Entrepreneur of Distinction” award in 1998. He is the holder of three patents for spacecraft products as well as 15 patents in the telcom and medical industries.

He is active in the Colorado Aerospace community, serving on Boards including the Space Science Institute, Colorado Space Grant Consortium, Colorado Space Business Roundtable, COLABS, and
Parabilis.

He is currently an executive advisor to aerospace companies including Redwire, Agile Space Industries, Black Swift Technologies and Amplified Space.

eSpace: The Center for Space Entrepreneurship

Scott is the co-founder of eSpace: The Center for Space Entrepreneurship; the only congressionally funded organization chartered with supporting the creation and development of entrepreneurial space
companies. Scott raised more than $3M to fund eSpace, including $2M from congress. eSpace incubated a dozen Colorado entrepreneurial space companies. Notably, a company incubated by eSpace with a $20K grant recently sold for approximately $450M.

Katasi, the world's first cloud-based distracted driving solution

From 2010 to present, Scott has been CEO/Founder of Katasi, raising more than $10M and working in partnership with US Telco’s to deploy the world’s first cloud-based distracted driving solution. Scott and the Katasi story were featured by Katie Couric as part of her World 3.0 series on technologies that are changing the world.

Lifelong creator and innovator

Scott received a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin in 1980. After graduation, he moved to Jackson Hole, Wyoming to be a ski instructor, and then to Colorado to work
as a nuclear weapons engineer, before founding Starsys.

Scott is actively involved in the University of Colorado and Colorado State University entrepreneurial and aerospace departments as a guest lecturer. Throughout his career as an entrepreneur, Scott has shared his experiences by writing in national publications and speaking internationally on a variety of topics including entrepreneurship, the unique nature of the space business and the creation of extraordinary corporate cultures.
